Mr White visited Class 6 to tell us about how the military disposes of bombs. First, he gave us a presentation on the different roles and jobs needed to dispose of a bomb. Some of the roles were:
· Engineers and electricians to repair the bomb disposal robots in case there are any malfunctions.
· Marketing officers to pay for the equipment and robotics required to dispose of the bomb.
· A willing officer to test the equipment on military owned land.
· The police to evacuate any civilians.
· The Marines and Navy in case the bomb is in the ocean or natural water source.
After that, Mr White showed us some pictures of the bombs that were disposed of recently in Exmouth and Plymouth.
· Exmouth bomb: On Wednesday, 14th January 2026 a 600m cordon was put into the marina and there was a forced evacuation of approximately 2500 properties. It was safely detonated at sea on Friday 16th January.
· Plymouth bomb: This was found on a building site in the Millbay area in January. About 800 residents were evacuated from the surrounding area. The device was transported out to sea and detonated.
Mr White finished the presentation and we had the opportunity to try out driving the bomb disposal robot called the Dragon Runner. An obstacle course had been set up in the hall and we had to remotely control and navigate the robot through the obstacle course. We controlled it by using a joystick attached to a remote control camera so we could see the robot’s path. It was great fun! We also did some activity sheets about bomb disposal. Thank you to Mr White for volunteering his time and sharing his knowledge to give us this amazing experience. by Amelia and Alfred, Class 6
